Coffee and Connection

The PTA recently hosted its first Coffee & Connect event, launching a new series designed to strengthen the connection between families and the school through meaningful conversation. Parents gathered in the school library, with an online option available, to continue an important discussion about students’ use of technology. The conversation builds on two digital events held last year with Dr. Nathan Thoma, Clinical Associate Professor of Psychology at Weill Cornell Medical College and Pocantico parent, and Joe McGrath, fellow Pocantico parent, educational technology director, and Board of Education member.

Golden Guests

Did Santa really visit Pocantico? It sure looks like he did! Whether or not it was really the jolly man himself, he was among several friends, neighbors, alumni and grandparents of students who visited the school for the annual Golden Guests event! Sponsored by the PTA, guests gathered to catch up with one another, reminisce and enjoy a concert with the 7th and 8th Grade Band as well as the 5th and 6th Grade Choir! After, guests enjoyed a light breakfast and continued their visit.

Radio City

They say if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere . . . and our sixth graders are on their way! Our Sixth Grade Chorus ventured into New York City where they enjoyed the holiday displays and PERFORMED, under the direction of Choral Director Juliet Freedman, at Radio City Music Hall!!!! This is the third year in a row the chorus has performed at the famed venue before a matinee of the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular!

A letter from the Superintendent,

Dear Pocantico Hills Community,

Happy Holidays to all of our families, students, staff and community!

The month of December has been a mix of important classroom work and seasonal celebrations.

We rang in the season with a number of community events, including our annual Golden Guests event. It was wonderful to see so many returning faces and welcome them back to Pocantico. Several guests took a tour, and all enjoyed a dress rehearsal of our concerts.

Speaking of which, “Bravo!” to our Elementary students and our Middle School band and choir performers as well. On two separate nights we enjoyed music from each group of students. They were amazing and it was a wonderful way to showcase their talent and enthusiasm!

There were even more musical adventures taking place at Poco, as our Sixth Grade Chorus performed on the stage at Radio City Music Hall. What an amazing experience for them and a special way to share with a broader audience the amazing work being done here at Poco.

A special thank you to the PTA, which this month hosted a Coffee and Conversation event along with our Educational Technology Director Alana Winnick and Director of Student Services Christine Perricelli. Participants gathered in our library and via online, to discuss the impact of technology on their children and how to help them find a balance. I look forward to more topics being discussed at these important events in the future and appreciate the PTA’s interest in facilitating them.

Once again, I wish you all a joyful holiday season. I look forward to more great things from our Pocantico students and staff in the new year!

Warm regards,
Rich Calkins

Winter Concerts

The weather turned cold and brisk just in time for a seasonal performances.

Taking the stage first were the Elementary students!

Our First and Second Graders took to the stage and presented "Snoozy Snowflake," by Jill and Michael Gallina!

Then it was the Third and Fourth Graders turn. They sang their hearts out with "Snow Way Out" by Sally K. Albrecht and Jay Althouse. This performance included a surprise appearance from Old Man Winter!

Thank you to Music Teacher Juliet Freedman for a wonderful evening of music!

A week later it was another wonderful night of music, this time brought to us by our Middle School students!

The audience enjoyed a series of delightful tunes thanks to our Fifth and Sixth Grade Band and Chorus, the Sixth Grade Band, along with the Seventh and Eighth Grade Band and Chorus and the Jazz Band!

Bravo to Band Director Michael Murray, Choir Director Juliet Freedman and accompanist Aram Ko, not to mention our talented musicians and singers!
