Dear Families,

Thank you so much to our very own Pocantico Hills Fire Department for their huge turnout and for the outstanding Fire Prevention Day assemblies with all our students.  Their level of engagement and connection with the children are the best!   Please have a conversation with your child about what was discussed and reviewed again this year - the important strategies, steps to take, things to remember, and plans to have in the event of a fire, including identifying an outdoor meeting location for the family.

  • If you’re in your bedroom during a fire, feel the door for heat – if it’s hot, don’t open it.  If it’s cool, you can get out.
  • If you’re stuck, then take clothes or blankets and cover the gap under the bedroom door.
  • Stay low to the ground if there is smoke because smoke rises.
  • Open your window and drape a piece of clothing out of the window to show a firefighter that you are there.
  • Yell a lot and yell about where you are.  Be very loud and do not hide – it’s the opposite of “hide and seek” - the goal is to be found as EASILY as possible.
  • Your family, firefighters, and other responders are all on the same team.
  • If it’s safe to get out, then get out, and then go to the designated meet-up spot.
  • Don’t go in to find pets.

We also conducted a fire drill this morning – it was supposed to be while the Fire Department was with us, but then they had to leave to respond to an actual call!  As you know, our day ended with an early dismissal drill – thank you for your support.

PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES: NOVEMBER 3
We’ll once again be holding our first parent-teacher conferences on Tuesday, November 3 (Election Day).  There will be a combination of virtual or in-person options, as well as evening slots for those who are unavailable during the day.  We’ll have more registration details for you later, but I wanted you to have this day on your radar and understand what your general options will be.

MIDWAY POINT OF THE 1ST QUARTER
Knowing that conferences are a few weeks away, if there are any burning questions you have about your child’s progress now, you can always reach out to your child’s teacher for feedback – that invitation is always open!  In addition, for middle school parents, since we’re a little past the midway point of the first quarter, now is a great time to log into the Parent Portal to look at your child’s current grades.
POCO SPIRIT GAMES – COME OUT AND SUPPORT THE HAWKS!
Our first Spirit Game is today – our students are ready to vociferously cheer on one of our boys' soccer teams as they battle Harrison on our home field.  As a reminder, each of our main fall teams (both boys' soccer, girls' soccer, and girls' volleyball) has a game dedicated to building school spirit with a big home crowd!  We encourage our 5th – 8th grade students to stay and cheer that team on, and we provide extra chaperoning and transportation home for all who want to stay and root for the Hawks! We'll send out a ParentSquare registration form for each one, so we know how many kids to expect.
If you have a child in elementary school who wants to go, a family member has to bring him/her.  All games start at 4:30 and parking is in Gate 1.

October 14: Girls Soccer vs Edgemont
October 22: Boys Soccer (Blue) vs Blind Brook
October 28: Volleyball vs Dobbs Ferry

Also, a reminder that Monday is Columbus Day (celebrating the anniversary of the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas in 1492).  It is also acknowledged as Indigenous Peoples’ Day (celebrating the history and cultures of those living in the Americas at the time of Columbus’ arrival).
